The most interesting results which have come to my knowledge of late are physical rather than astronomical, being some magnificient photographs of the moon obtained by Mr. Rutherfurd by means of an 11 ½ inch object-glass made by himself & adapted not for optical bet [?] for the chemical rays, and bearing the same relation to an achromatic that the cheminal bears to the optical spectrum. By substitution these object glass for the achromatie in his large refraction he has obtained some magnificent photographs of the moon, far surpassing the fine one which Mr. Draper had previously obtained with a 15 inch reflector ».
Gould évoque ses recherches « astronomical poursuits & investigations », « You have probably observed the important charge (for a small matter) in our American Naut. Almanac, by which the original notation of Bessel for the quantities ABCD abcd used in reducing from mean to apparent place has been restrued instead of the confusing & distored notation of the British Nautical Almanac & the British Association Catalogue [of stars] […] ».
Gould évoque l’esclavage « the duties which honorable American citizen owed to his country when threatened with absolute destruction by a set of traitor for the sake of extending human slavery have been nearly all fulfilled […] ». Etc.
