Prony was sent several times to Italy by Napoleon to study the methods of regulation of water courses; in this work, he sets out the principles of fluid mechanics, analyzing the speed and pressure of running water, considering the realization of channels and ducts, and describing and explaining his experiments on the movement of water within cylindrical pipes and open channels (Roberts-Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, pp. 269-70).
