The book is dedicated to the Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne, who had Hutton engaged to do occasional work for the Board of Longitude. The first part is a comprehensive historical introduction. The second part contains Hutton's tables of logarithmic and trigonometric functions which were immediately distinguished by their reliability and remained the standard for a century.

Charles Hutton (1732-1823) was an eminent mathematician and figure in the Royal Society. He made substantial contributions to the teaching of mathematics as a professor at the Royal Military Academy. His experiments and research included the significant computation of the mean density of the Earth based on Maskelyne's observations.

From the libraries of Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), British inventor and mechanical engineer, and Hervé Bazin (born 1935), French veterinarian specialising in immunology, vaccinology and infectious diseases.
